Register For Webinar Where I’ll Be Speaking About Local ICE Watch
Indivisible Illinois is hosting a Feb. 17 webinar "Protecting Immigrant Families”
You might have noticed my last post about ICE arresting a young man in Champaign-Urbana disappeared from my newsletter. After I got a call that the article was being widely circulated and workers at the unnamed company were getting fearful, I pulled the piece down.
If you would like to know more about our local ICE Watch efforts, register for a webinar hosted by Indivisible Illinois on Monday, February 17, at 7:30pm. I will be on a panel along with my dear friend Lucia Maldonado, Latino Family Liaison for the Urbana School District, as well as Fred Tsao from Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.
The news continues to come in about ICE raids in Chicago and the wave of panic gripping the city. Stories circulate of many parents who are keeping their children home from school. In an inspiring story, Kelley Hayes writes at her blog “Organizing My Thoughts” about teachers who have been setting up “Sanctuary Teams” to defend their undocumented students. There are reports of federal agents arresting people in Chicago without search warrants. There was already a massive backlog of cases in immigration courts that will now be pushed to the limits.
Check out my co-workers at Education Justice Project, Erick and Lee, who were featured in the Chicago Tribune for their work putting out a guide for those facing deportation. Since Trump’s election they have received more than 4,000 requests for the guide, titled A New Path.
Lastly, a reminder that the court date for Yafa Issa, Palestinian student charged with mob action, is this Wednesday, Feb. 12, 9am in Courtroom A at the Champaign County Courthouse.
How did it go for Yafa Issa? Thanks again shut your work.
